Brunei Open
A New Flag
In Asian Tour’s
Champions List
““It is very exciting. I’m the
first Bangladeshi to play on
the Asian Tour and in the
two years that I’m on Tour, I
have won a tournament. It is
unbelievable”, Siddikur
It is a common thing to know that a new
champion has risen in Asian Tour events
from the ‘champion producing’ countries
such as Australia, New Zealand India, South
Korea, Thailand, Philippines or Singapore.
And it is nothing special to hear that a new
Asian Tour champion comes from a country
that has delegated a bunch of players in a
tournament.
But it woud be a special momentum when the
only Asian Tour touring pro from Bangladesh,
triumphantly won one of the full sanction
series. Moreover, he has just had his tour card
for twenty months after getting through the
2009 Q-school.
Mohammad Siddikur, a 25-years old player
from Dhaka, victoriously recorded a rewarding
history for his country after defeating South
African JBE Kruger through an uptight play-off
at Brunei Open , Sunday 1 August.
Siddikur’s success on this seventh Asian Tour
series this year was not really a surprise to
some of his contenders as he was already in
big ten at Queen’s Cup in Thailand last June.

Besides his accomplishment on Asian Tour
, Siddikur has collected 4 professional titles since he left his amateur status in 2007; 2010
American Express Bangladesh Open, 2009
Global Green Bangalore Open, 2008 HUDAGTPL – Unitech Haryana Open, 2008 PGTI
Players Championship at Poona Golf Club.
His winning at Brunei Open this year seemed
to have been marked when he made hole in
one in the second round and co-led the third
round with Malaysian Ben Leong. He made
the fourth round at 4-under par 67 of total
16-under par 268 to match JBE Kruger’s score
who was in the flight ahead of him, and pulled
him into the sudden death play off.
They ran an exciting one hole battle and finally
Siddikur marked his win after Kruger failed to
do his 10 feet putt for par.
“It is very exciting. I’m the first Bangladeshi to
play on the Asian Tour and in the two years
that I’m on Tour, I have won a tournament. It
is unbelievable”, said Siddikur who bagged
US$47,550 as the champion.
Apart from the prize money, Siddikur has made
it to put his country’s name and flag in the
winners’ category on Asian Tour players’ entry
list for at least the next two years.
“I hope to inspire more people to take up the
game of golf in Bangladesh. This is a good
victory for me and my country”. Said Siddikur.
The Filipino Juvic Pangunsan who has showed
an elevated performance from the last few
tournaments , made an impressive finish at T3
with 15-under par 269. It is his second ten best
from the six of Asian Tour series that he has taken part. |
