Dr. Haruhisa Handa,
“The Light” To The Blind Golfers

“Golf has been accepted in the Olympics at Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and we hope that blind golf can be accepted into the Paralympics in due course as well. The International Paralympics Committee is currently considering a bid to include disabled golf into the Paralympics programme and I sincerely hope that they give this the go-ahead. This would really help to springboard blind golf as well as other disabled disciplines of the sport to a global audience”, Dr. Handa.

“No holidays”, that describes well the activity of a Japanese philanthropist and businessman, Dr. Haruhisa Handa, who owns some companies such as publishing, travel agencies, consulting and pharmacies and established the International Sports
Promotion Society (ISPS).

He is known among the golf community in Asia for his activity in establishing the Japanese Blind Golf Association 23 years ago as a place to compete for the blind golfers . It is a part of the International Blind Golf Association (IBGA). He is known as ‘Father of blind golf’.
“Spreading the message of blind golf is very important to me. When I took up the game myself I had the opportunity to play with a blind golfer. He had such a positive outlook on life which I was so impressed with that, I decided to get involved in promoting the sport”, Dr. Handa said about his activity.

Last August, he signed a partnership with the Asian Tour Executive Chairman, Kyi Hla Han to stage a new Asian Tour series entitled The Handa Singapore Classic which is planned to take place at Orchid Country Club and Marina Bay Golf Course-Singapore next 9-12 September 2010.

This US$ 400,00 event will be preceded by a Pro-Am tournament on September 8 which will field a team of blind golfers showcasing the appeal of sport.

To Dr. Haruhisa Handa, , supporting the Asian Tour through the organizing of The Handa Singapore Classic is not about business. He said that ISPS has been known as a non-profit organization whose focus is on the charitable activities through sport events especially golf. They have been sponsored European Senior Tour, Faldo Series Asia, Legends Tour, Japan Golf Tour and now Asian Tour.
“As Chairman of ISPS, I am delighted to be supporting the inaugural Handa Singapore Classic. Singapore is a wonderful place and this event promises to be another fantastic spectacle on the Asian Tour”, said Dr. Handa.

Dr. Haruhisa Handa does not only want to raise people’s awareness about the important of business in golf industry these days, but more than that, he has an ambition to develop the blind golfers’ aspiration to be able to compete in an international level.

This would really help to springboard blind golf as well as other disabled disciplines of the sport to a global audience”, added Dr. Handa.

Playing golf in darkness is not an easy thing to do for anyone . And at least, ‘the light’ provided by Dr. Haruhisa Handa will light up the way for the blind players to achieve in golf.
